Reverse Engineering Surgical Screws for FEA Simulation & Medical Implant Design

Medical screws are used in surgical applications for fixing and clamping bespoke inserts to human tissue such as bones. The torsional moment or rotational force that is created during the screwing process generates a tensile stress along the length of the screw and it is this stress that ensures the insert remains in place. MAXONIQ, a company specialising in the design and manufacture of bespoke cranio-maxillofacial surgical implants, contracted Scan-Xpress to produce accurate CAD models on a series of small surgical screws.

This project is a great demonstration that ATOS scanning systems can acquire quality high-resolution data on very small objects. It also explains that accurate CAD models can be produced on any object for a variety of applications including FEA simulation. Scan-Xpress appreciated the opportunity to be a part of an exciting project that will help improve the quality of surgeries and patient outcomes.
